    Most of us are aware that there is chlorine added to our water. The reason the chlorine is added is to disinfect the water from harmful bacteria and viruses. In the early 1900's some 35,000 lives were lost due to bacteria and viruses in the water. They added chlorine to the water and within the first year they saved 30,000 lives. Unfortunately chlorine is like a drug the doctor prescribes to you, there are always side effects. The problem was the side effects were not anticipated. The chlorine mixed with other naturally organic chemicals ( dead plant and animal matter ) and spun off a whole new set of chemical water contaminants called Disinfection By Products (DBP's).

    ChlorineDBP's were a direct result of adding chlorine to the water. DBP's like Trihalomethanes are harmful not only for drinking but bathing in. Our skin is our body's largest organ. When bathing in water that has chemicals you actually absorb the chemicals through you skin ( same way the nicotine patch works ).

    Chlorine is naturally a gas. It is a Volatile Organic Chemical (VOC). VOC's aerate very quickly when heated. The problem is when you take a hot shower you are usually in a confined space and that chlorine becomes a vapor. You inhale this vapor while you are showering. Chlorine can be absorbed into you body much faster by inhaling it as a gas than drinking it.

    The latest studies are showing that it can actually be much worse to inhale these gasses in a 10 minute shower than if you were to drink 8 glasses of the same chlorinated water a day.

    Chlorine is not the only way to disinfect the water. In most parts of Europe they don't use chlorine at all. They use ozination to disinfect the water. The process is much more expensive but the long term health problems are minimal.

    We are still using chlorine to disinfect our water not because it is the only technology available, but because it is the cheapest.

    ClChlorinating water does kill most bacteria but it does not kill all bacteria and viruses. Cryptosporidium and Giardia have protective shells that keep them from being killed by the chlorine.

    Our bodies have "good" bacteria that live in our digestive tract to break down our food and give us nutrients. Studies have show that when you drink chlorinated water you are also killing your own body's bacteria.

    Many other countries have conducted research on chlorinated drinking water. The latest study on chlorinated drinking water conducted in Finland found a direct correlation between the amount of chlorine added to drinking water and cancer in lab rats.

    What's the answer to this problem?

    It is important to remove the chlorine from your water, but unrealistic to expect the government to remove it. That makes it your responsibility for your home to decide if you want the chlorine removed.

    Many people have water softeners. Water softeners do not remove chlorine. They only remove the hardness from the water.
